Learning a new design program can feel both exciting and intimidating. For many aspiring designers, the desire to master new software often clashes with the roadblocks that come along the way. The good news is that every misstep brings you closer to tapping into your creative potential!

I myself have faced this complex issue during my career. Here are some tips and effective strategies to overcome them.

The Overwhelming Learning Curve

At first glance, a new design tool may seem like an endless maze of features and functions. Whether you are dealing with AutoCad, Unreal Engine, Adobe Photoshop, SketchUp, or others, the complexity can be daunting. In fact, research shows that nearly 60% of new users report feeling overwhelmed by design software's capabilities.

But don’t forget that every expert was once a beginner! Start by familiarizing yourself with the main interface and features. Many programs include introductory tutorials or guided tours, which can be excellent starting points. Dedicate a few hours to these resources; they can provide clarity and boost your confidence.

Navigating Common Functions

As you dive deeper into the program, you'll start to encounter various functions and shortcuts. Initially, it may be frustrating when your fingers don’t follow your brain’s instructions seamlessly. This disconnect is a common challenge for many beginners.

To overcome this hurdle, practice is essential. Start by creating small projects, such as a basic cube or house (a boxy one will do) and use some of your program's commonly used shortcut keys - referred to as "hotkeys" on your keyboard.

Technical Glitches and Frustration

Those darn Windows updates and program crashes were (are) the death of me when I am in a workflow!

It's normal to face creative block as you work with new software, leading to feelings of self-doubt. You might ask yourself, "Am I really capable of this?" It's crucial to be gentle with yourself during this phase. The creative process is rarely a straight path.

To combat this, consider joining online communities or forums related to the program you're learning. Platforms like Reddit and specific design groups on Facebook can be invaluable. Engaging with peers who share their challenges and victories can reignite your own creativity. Remember, even established designers have faced similar hurdles.

I struggled with self-doubt blocks for MONTHS and to be quite honest, it was a very emotional time for me. It seems a bit silly now, but I went through a grieving process as I had to "kill off" my old habits and knowledge of past programs and shortcuts I had picked up throughout the years. Not only was I learning multiple new-to-me softwares, I was leaving behind the very first design program that I initially made me fall in love with the art of designing.

Needless to say, give yourself grace to make space for new opportunities and refresh ideas. You ARE capable and you will achieve even greater success by challenging yourself!
